Heading out to that festival, game, or concert this weekend? Take a moment to plan ahead!
Making it home safe is rarely a product of sheer luck. Attending any crowded event obviously carries some level of risk. So what can you do to be more prepared and make sure you and yours get home safe this weekend?
Let’s take a quick moment to consider the following and plan for the unexpected:
- Watch or read up on local news and weather for where your going- plan ahead and be prepared. Check the events website for important information before you go.
- Be mindful of where your carrying your valuables (wallet, money, credit/debit cards, purse, cell phone) and make sure you’re not making yourself an easy target for a pick pocket. This goes for the car too, make sure you’re not leaving valuables in plain sight or the car unlocked.
- Be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to where the exits are. When you get somewhere new make sure you’re constantly familiarizing yourself with the area.
- If you’re going with a group, plan a meeting point in-case you become separated. Plan times to check in on each other and follow up when someone doesn’t.
- Is it going to be a long day? Make sure you memorize or write down important numbers, so when your phone dies, you can still get in contact with your group if separated.
- If your taking the kids, make sure you remember to have the “don’t talk to strangers” talk one more time.
- Do you have a “Bug-Out-Bag” or “BOB” in your car with water, snacks, first aid kit, flashlight etc. just in-case you get stranded in the parking lot or on the side of the road while traveling to the event?
- How long is it going to take to get out of the parking lot or area in traffic? Do you have enough gas to sit at idle for an hour or more while you wait to get out? Ask a Security or Police Officer is there are any alternative routes out before getting in the car.
- Don’t forget to hydrate, with temperatures being near record highs lately, don’t skip the H2o. Don’t drink too much alcohol -remember this will not hydrate you.
- In the event of an crowd disturbance or fight stay calm and move away from the commotion as soon as possible. Avoid crowds where overly intoxicated people gather. If someone’s had too much to drink don’t be afraid to notify a Security or Police Officer.
Obviously, many of these precautions are very basic. However, keeping them in mind will help ensure you and yours stay safe and enjoy attending any event.
